The Dog Days of Summer!

Ahhhh the Dog Days of Summer…

Why do we call this indolent time such a thing? I wanted to know too, so I looked it up and found this,

“The ancient Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer “diēs caniculārēs” or “dog days.” The name came about because they associated the hottest days of summer with the star Sirius. Sirius was known as the “Dog Star” because it was the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Big Dog).”

Yep, makes TOTAL sense to me! Hot, humid, lazy, tongue-wagging, water-lapping, shade-napping, panting days of summer! My poor pooches are worn-out from doing nothing all day! Actually there are days I feel the same way and I bet you do too.

While I, my family, and the farm critters are complaining about the heat, my friends who are visiting from West Africa are freezing to death! I thought they would enjoy a trip to the coast – and I certainly was in want of one to escape the heat – but they had to layer up in sweats and jackets to enjoy their first view of the Pacific Ocean! Baby Paul, had the time of his (20+months) life tho!

Isn’t it funny how acclimated to our surroundings we become, and how quickly and uncomfortable we get 15 degrees or so one way or the other of the ‘norm?’

But back to the dog-days…  I know that I don’t have to tell, ask, or beg any of my readers and listeners to treat their furry companions well in the heat, but I was surprised the other day when a passenger of mine asked why I was staying in the car while they ran into the store for a moment.  I said, the dog is with us, I need to leave the A/C on. “Why?” they wanted to know.

To be fair and kind, they were young and clearly not a pet owner, but it made me think.

If you have pets AND teens or young adults around, please share – no, emphasize – some basic hot-weather care with them.

  • Keep plenty of water available, inside and out
  • Keep walks brief and on cool surfaces (no hot pavement or blacktop)
  • Never, ever, leave in a car where temps can soar to above 100 degrees on a sunny day even with the windows cracked open for “ventilation”
  • Don’t expect too much out of your furry friends this time of year. (Or your accountants, after August 15, they are FREE until the next big tax deadline!)

New Podcast | Katy Perry on Conversations with Delilah

I had a delightful conversation with Katy Perry the other day. We had never spoken before and I was so heartened by our chat. She is a very real, very down-to-earth woman with a heart of gold!

It’s so odd what our perceptions can be of people due to the media’s need to hype and sensationalize.

Katy has come of age in the lime-light and the very real, very human side of her is not often illustrated. That is the person I spoke to and fell in love with!

This is the Katy Perry that works closely with the Boys and Girls Club and is donating one dollar of every concert ticket purchased to the organization.

If you’re a Katy Perry fan, and especially if you haven’t been before, listen in to my new podcast at Conversations with Delilah. You’ll fall in love with her too!

Recipe | Homemade Doggie Treats

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup organic pumpkin filling
  • 1/2 cup crunchy organic peanut butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tspn bakin soda

Directions:

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a small bowl combine flour and baking soda.
  • In a large bowl combine all other ingredients, until well blended.
  • Add dry mixture to large bowl, a little at a time, knead until stiff dough forms.
  • Turn dough out and pat or roll until approximately 1/4″ thick.
  • Cut with cookie cutters in bone, dog, or other shapes. Place on cookie sheet leaving ample room in between.
  • Bake for 15 minutes. Cool
  • Treat your pooch, as well as the fur buddies of friends and neighbors, to a delicious healthful treat! (Ask about any allergies first!)

The critters and I are keepin’ our cool on the farm, and the fans are a whirlin’ in the studios. I’m sippin’ lots of iced tea and home-made kambucha.

I hope the evenings find you chillin’ on the front porch, or in front of the fan while you listen to a warm-hearted friend on the radio.

Write to me HERE and tell me what you’re doing to beat the heat this summer!

God bless and Love Someone,

~ Delilah
